It appears as though the longtime rumors of the closing of the Blackzilians fight team may be coming to fruition. Talks of the super gym closing date back to January of last year when the news came out that owner Glenn Robinson was filing for bankruptcy.
Last November Robinson told MMAFighting.com that it no longer made financial sense to keep paying rent on the Boca Raton location that previously housed the Blackzilians, but not to worry because they were opening a new state of the art facility that will be unlike anything ever seen in MMA. Robinson went on to explain that the team would be training at a temporary location in Pompano Beach until the new facilities were open sometime in January.
Now the likelihood of Robinson’s plans panning out do not look very promising. Blackzilian’s striking coach Henri Hooft, wrestling coach Greg Jones and UFC fighter/BJJ coach Gilbert Burns are coaching at Combat Club MMA in Lantana, Florida a half an hour drive north of the Pompano Beach location mentioned by Robinson last November.
Much of the team is at this location including Matt Mitrione, Stefan Struve and Jason Jackson, while other team members including the Villafort brothers and coach/MMA veteran Jorge Santiago are training at CS MMA in Pompano Beach, most likely the location Robinson was referring to.
The divided team has not officially announced their disbanding, but we are approaching mid January and with no news on the “new facility” the prospects of the team staying together are looking grim.
